Extreme Day Cancelled Due to Unstable Conditions
16 Aug, 2013
Friday, 16 August (Lake Wanaka, NZ) – The Extreme Day of the 2013 World Heli Challenge has been cancelled in light of increasing avalanche risk in the steep terrain that had been earmarked for this elite heli-accessed free ride event held out of Wanaka, New Zealand.
“The decision to not proceed with the Extreme Day of this year’s World Heli Challenge was a disappointing and tough call to make but ultimately was the right one for a number of very compelling reasons, first of which was safety,” said event manager KJ Randall.
“We all wanted to see the Extreme Day come off and have another incredible day in the mountains and the helicopters – but the conditions were steadily stacking up against us and after extensive consultation today with our guiding team, snow safety crew and our heli operators the decision became clear.”
The World Heli Challenge is a unique helicopter-accessed free riding competition for skiers and snowboarders combining a Freestyle and Extreme Day. The Freestyle Day was held Monday, 12 August on Mt Turner with a field of 22 skiers and snowboarders from around the globe showcasing their skills on previously unridden Southern Lakes Heliski terrain.
In the 15 years of the event this is only the second time the full two days have not been completed. KJ Randall explains, “The World Heli Challenge is committed to delivering the best possible event and combining elite athletes, great conditions and exciting terrain to create something special with world-class production outcomes. Tomorrow we couldn’t guarantee all those elements would align and we simply won’t compromise athlete safety for a sub-par outcome.”
The athletes now plan to head to Treble Cone for a fun day of free skiing sharing the final day of the two-week event window together getting some turns in. They will then be joined by local musician Thomas Oliver for a special dinner and show at Urban Grind in Wanaka that night. Tickets for this special gig are available at the Board House and Racers Edge or on the door.
The iON Showcase Awards Night remains scheduled as planned on Thursday, 22 August in the Lake Wanaka Centre and will be a huge celebration of all the Canon Shootout content and announcement of the winning athletes as determined by their judged run on the Freestyle Day.
